FOLKETS FESTIVAL - A CELEBRATION OF NEW NORDIC MUSIC
Dreamers' Circus & VEGA presents:
FOLKETS FESTIVAL - a celebration of Nordic folk music
Dreamers’ Circus and the iconic music venue in København, VEGA, are combining to curate a festival that presents music from the Nordic countries across a full day next May 4th.
Leading folk and roots based artists, Dreamers’ Circus wanted to present a one day festival that focusses on the great quality of roots music in the Nordic countries.
In addition to Dreamers’ Circus concert there will be performances from Finnish maestros Frigg and the dance collective, Nordisk Dans - with more to be announced.
From People's House to People's Festival
With a sense for quality, aesthetics and good craftsmanship, the architect Vilhelm Lauritzen designed Folkets Hus, which from 1956 to the mid-1990s was an all-embracing meeting place in Vesterbro for the labor movement. In 1996 Folkets Hus became VEGA. A concert venue that, with three concert stages, is visited by a quarter of a million people every year.
70 years after Folkets Hus opened its doors to the people, the folk music scene occupies the iconic old halls when Dreamers' Circus in collaboration with VEGA invites you to the "Folkets Festival" on Saturday 4 May 2024. From morning to night, every corner and room at VEGA will vibrate to the sounds of Nordic folk music and all the many aspects that belong to the genre such as dance, jamming and workshops. Leading folk musicians from Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark will celebrate new Nordic folk music.
As a venue, VEGA has mainly been associated with popular music. As a partner in the "Folk Festival", folk music is lifted and given the blue stamp and welcomed on the hard floors of the capital on an equal footing with popular music. The hope is to dismantle the prejudice that folk music equals old men in clogs, but instead an environment that is largely alive, relevant and continues to develop. It is expected that around 1,000 spectators will visit the festival. In addition, of course, the many contributors come from all over the Nordics.
Dreamers’ Circus are a Danish Swedish trio comprising of piano and accordion player Nikolaj Busk, the cittern player form Skåne, Ale Carr along with Roskilde native Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen. Since their inception the band have toured widely, especially in north America and Japan bringing high quality music that derives from not just the folk music all the band members were raised with but also incorporates elements of classical, jazz and pop music. All-rounders musically. Dreamers’ Circus are path-breakers in taking music from this part of the world to a wider international audience.
